So if a zombie is 2 zones away from a group of 3 survivors that it can see, and only 1 zone away from another survivor it can see, it moves towards the group of 3, right?

I'm questioning this because I think it would move towards the zone with the most sound, but the rules also state that it follows the shortest route possible.

1) Zombies move towards the loudest survivor(s) they can see.
2) If they can't see any survivors, they move towards the loudest zone.

After establishing where the zombies are going, you look for the shortest route to that zone.

1) If there is a tie for shortest path to that (one) zone, they split.
2) If there is a tie for loudest zone (either a tie for loudest zone with survivors they can see, or a tie for loudest zone that they can't see), then they'll split to get to those zones, if necessary (e.g. if the tie results in the same short-term movement, then no splitting is necessary).

Everything sounded great and made sense until the bolded part? What does it mean? The rules don't mention anything about length in the rules concerning choosing between different zone containing the same number of Noise tokens.

an example maybe?

What he means is, say you have the following:

Then the Walker at [BGCOLOR=#FF0000](1)[/BGCOLOR] would NOT split.

Yup, since the first move makes no difference in the travel to the noise, the walker wouldn't split. However, if the walker had been in the dead center in that example it would split, one going north, one south.
