I was solo playing the "drive-by" scenario last night; trying to learn the game before bringing it to game night. I played through the tutorial game first, found it rather enjoyable, but doing "drive-by" was just awful.
So I started in the streets, had a character with a crowbar go first and move to a door of a building. Spawned all the zombies inside (which amounted to a walker in every room most times), and tried to get in. Rolled poorly. Early attacks zapped starting equipment. Zombies all over us.
Then I tried that again, thinking I might have just had bad luck, with one character zipping over to search the nearby pimpmobile. Bad rolls, spawn point right behind us killed everyone who stayed in the streets.
Not learning from my mistake, I did basically the same thing again, expecting a different result.
So what the heck are you supposed to do when you start in the streets and only have your starting equipment?
You need to get in buildings to search for stuff, right? And when you finally get inside there are zombies everywhere.
And when you're in a zone with three zombies, you can't move at all because you don't have the action points to run away, right? And since one of your people starts with a pistol, they're no good at managing zombies in your zone.
I'm not asking about this scenario exactly, but just about starting in the streets and moving into buildings that are full of zombies when you have, essentially, nothing to work with.
I thought about "drive-by" a little more, thinking I can open a door, run to the other side of the building, while they funnel out a bit, go in, search for stuff, and maybe have better stuff to kill them with. maybe one person can stay in a car to manage the exits, but they would be racking up tons of kills and have no equipment to show for it.
Just thoughts. I feel like I don't have the mind for this game. It feels like it's just really, really hard.
