We found 4 survivors to be very, very difficult to almost impossible (especially if 1 or even 2 survivors have a few bad consecutive dice rolls...) . We always play 6 survivors now. Either we share group responsibility for the added 2 (if only 4 players are playing) or one of the more veteran players runs an extra survivor.
The card and spawn adjustment sound like an excellent approach, but we liked the simpler one... run 6 survivors, leave everything else as is.
